Azerbaijan Airlines, branded as AZAL, is the flag carrier of Azerbaijan, operating from Baku’s modern Heydar Aliyev International Airport. The airline connects the Caucasus region with cities across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, and has invested in fleet modernisation with the introduction of Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

Seat and cabin

The Boeing 787-8 features business class in a 1-2-1 staggered layout with fully lie-flat seats extending to 74 inches and a 21-inch width. Each seat includes a 15.4-inch touchscreen entertainment system, USB and AC power outlets, and a personal reading light. The cabin design incorporates Azerbaijani cultural elements with warm amber and blue tones. The older Airbus A340-500 offers a less competitive 2-2-2 layout with angled-flat seats. On the 787, direct aisle access is available at every seat, providing a modern and private business class experience.

Dining and service

Azerbaijan Airlines serves a blend of Azerbaijani and international cuisine, featuring regional specialties such as lamb kebabs, plov rice pilaf, dolma, and pomegranate-based salads. The wine list includes Azerbaijani wines from the Shamakhi and Ismayilli regions alongside European selections. Traditional Azerbaijani tea is served with local pastries. Service is attentive and hospitable, reflecting Caucasian traditions of guest hospitality, though the overall soft product is simpler than Gulf carrier competitors.

Lounge experience

AZAL operates a business class lounge at Baku Heydar Aliyev Airport offering hot Azerbaijani dishes, a tea station, shower facilities, and comfortable seating with views of the modern terminal architecture. The lounge features traditional Azerbaijani design elements and local cuisine. At outstations, passengers typically access contract lounges or partner facilities. The Baku lounge is the strongest part of the ground experience, reflecting the country’s investment in its aviation hub.
